I joined Lenbrook in 2009, just as the community wrapped up a major expansion that doubled our size and marked 25 years of service. Here we are today, celebrating our 35th anniversary and getting ready to embark on another expansion – one that will enable us to continue to offer Atlanta’s best opportunity to live life to its fullest for both current and future residents.

Michael Halpern co-founded the nonprofit inner-city mentoring program YES!Atlanta in 1988 and helped lead the organization for more than 27 years. He will be honored by LeadingAge Georgia at its annual Positive Aging Icon Award ceremony on November 18 at the Atlanta History Center.

On a splendid fall afternoon in September, more than 300 Lenbrook residents and associates celebrated the 35th Anniversary of Lenbrook, Atlanta’s premier Life Plan Community in Buckhead, with an elegant and fun party. The lively event highlighted both the best of the past 35 years at Lenbrook as well as the community’s newest addition: The Club, a comfortable setting for coffee and pastries during the day that turns into a cocktail and wine lounge in the evenings where Lenbrook residents can gather around happy hour and after dinner.

"Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you," wrote Dr. Seuss in his 1959 book, Happy Birthday to You! Wise words then and now, words which our chaplain, Robbye Jarrell, often likes to reframe and pose as a question to our residents: "What makes you you?" I like this question because it invites us to reflect on our past, look ahead to our future and get to know one another.
