Local High Schoolers Led by Top Atlanta Chef Heading to Statewide Cooking Competition

Lenbrook Chef has Mentored the Past Two Winning Teams

Meadowcreek High School students will be competing against 22 other schools in a culinary competition at Le Cordon Bleu in Tucker, Friday, March 26.

Led by Lenbrook Executive Chef Richard Hurst, the four high school students will cook a three-course meal at the 2010 Hospitality Education Foundation of Georgia (HEFG) State Culinary Competition. HEFG is a non-profit group that helps more than 2,000 students in 78 Georgia high schools gain opportunities to learn about careers in the hospitality industry.

“Our students are ready. They’ve been training since December, and we feel like we have a great chance at winning,” Hurst said.

The team’s menu will include pan seared scallops, stuffed chicken breast with vegetable paella, sautéed shoe-string asparagus, lemon mouse parfait with graham cracker crisp and other delicious dishes.

“For the past two years we’ve won, so we are going into this with a positive attitude and – more importantly – a love for cooking,” Hurst said.

Chef Richard Hurst, a native of Puerto Rico, trained at the Hotel Management School at the University of the East in Puerto Rico and has a degree in Culinary Arts from the Art Institute of Atlanta. He has been sous chef at Oak Room in Dunwoody and at the Rainwater Restaurant in Alpharetta. In 2003, he became the executive chef for the opening of Fuego Café in Alpharetta and Midtown.

Since 2004, he has been associated with Compass Group, the world’s leading food service provider, first as executive chef for the Bank of America headquarters in downtown Atlanta and then as executive chef for the CEO of SunTrust Bank before moving to Lenbrook.
