Enjoying Lenbrook Today and Providing for Tomorrow

For the past 19 years I have had the pleasure of calling Lenbrook my home, and it has been a very happy and active time in my life. Lenbrook has the best dance program in Atlanta, and the vespers and symphony programs enrich my life and bring me great joy. I enjoy having the opportunity to take part in the daily life of our community by serving on seven committees here at Lenbrook including: the Development Committee, Friends of the Arts Committee, Religion Committee, Dance Committee, Birthday Bash Committee, Programs and Events Committee, and Lenbrook Singers Committee. I also served earlier as President of the Residents Association.

My family has a long legacy at Lenbrook– six members of my family have been Lenbrook residents at different times! This place has brought joy and meaning to so many people I care about, and I want to help preserve Lenbrook for future generations. For me, including Lenbrook in my estate plans and becoming a member of the Legacy Society was a natural choice. I feel it is one of the best and most helpful things I could do today to provide for tomorrow.

The Lenbrook Legacy Society was established in 2013 to celebrate donors who desire to create a lasting legacy by including Lenbrook in their estate plans with a gift of $10,000 or more. As an original member of the Development Committee (which is made up of residents, Board members, and senior management), I have had the pleasure of helping to honor those who have included Lenbrook in their wills.

As a member of Lenbrook’s Development Committee, I have seen first-hand the positive impact we have had through giving. I am so proud to live in a community where we are able to provide emergency support to associates in need, scholarships to associates who desire to further their education, and care for fellow neighbors who have outlived their financial resources due to no fault of their own. These gifts have also allowed Lenbrook to create opportunities above and beyond what might otherwise be possible: for example, bringing in top-notch artists through the Friends of the Arts program, upgrading the lighting and sound systems in our Event Center, providing a wonderful library, and much more.

At the time of this post, 14 couples and individuals make-up the society, some of whom were forward-thinking and thoughtful enough to make a planned gift long before we had a way to recognize them. It is gratifying to be part of such a special group of people who trust Lenbrook to care for their gifts and enrich the lives of residents and associates in the future.

Dr. Manning Pattillo has been a Lenbrook resident since 1997. Before retirement, he served as President of Oglethorpe University from 1975 to 1988. After his time at Oglethorpe, he was a visiting professor at the University of Georgia, and held numerous community leadership positions, such as President of Georgia Special Olympics, Vice-Chairman of the Woodruff Arts Center, and President of the Dekalb Chamber of Commerce. In addition to his Ph.D. in social science, which he earned at the University of Chicago, he is also the recipient of eight honorary doctor’s degrees. Dr. Pattillo is a proud member of Atlanta Rotary and has had perfect attendance for 40 years.
