Lenbrook Upgrades Beloved Gouldian Finch Aviary

Since Lenbrook’s beginning, the aviary has been a popular landmark for residents, associates, and guests. It is not uncommon to walk by the aviary and see people clustered around the birds. Some lucky observers even see eggs or baby birds in the nest!

The finches have been cherished by Lenbrook Associate Eric Duke since he began working at Lenbrook in 1984. He recalls that the aviary was a daily destination for everyone who walked through the solarium on their way to the recreation deck.

“The baby birds were very rare to see back then. Today, they are more common due to the special care and nutrients the birds receive,” he said. “Now, the baby birds grow and move on to new homes.”

In 2024, as part of the first-floor renovations residents and associates banded together to upgrade the current aviary, which was acquired in 2008. While not the original Lenbrook aviary, this unique custom made aviary was donated by a generous Lenbrook neighbor.

The Lenbrook Aviary Task Force was chaired by resident Marty Gillin and included residents Celia Gilner and Libba Wight, associates Kelly Almond and Mike McDaniel, and avian specialist and bird owner Judy Gunby. Many Lenbrook Residents declared the aviary sacred for its role in the Lenbrook community and did not want to see it replaced by a new structure.

Judy Gunby provided invaluable input in refurbishing the aviary. The finches now have an improved living environment, and the caretakers have a more accessible and convenient way to care for the birds.

The dedication of the Lenbrook Aviary Task Force members exemplifies the strong love and devotion residents, associates, and guests have for the Gouldian finch aviary. Their hard work ensures that the beautiful, vibrant birds will spark joy and inspiration for many generations to come.
