Mind, Body, and Spirit: The Heart of Lifelong Learning at Lenbrook

Philosopher John Dewey famously said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” At Lenbrook, lifelong learning is a cornerstone of enriched senior living. Engaging opportunities for the mind, body, and spirit abound, with every day offering new ways to connect, discover, and enjoy life to the fullest.

Many Lenbrook Residents attend classes and workshops to delve into subjects that interest them or to spark new passions. Covering history, technology, literature, the arts, and more, these enriching programs feed the mind and soul. Authors, community leaders, doctors, and other subject matter experts are brought in as guest speakers on diverse topics ranging from government and current events to health, wellness, and the latest medical research, facilitating thought-provoking discussions on cultural trends and innovations.

After all, continuous learning is not just an individual pursuit. A 2019 study from The Journal of Aging and Health found that social learning environments are linked to better cognitive performance. The social interaction offered in learning opportunities that Lenbrook offers challenges the brain and strengthens neural networks.

Julie Witt a Lenbrook Resident says, “This vibrant community has something for everyone: stimulating and enriching programs, socialization, interesting, and intelligent residents, and management and staff that care about helping to make our lives full and multi-faceted. It is a pleasure to live in such a supportive environment.”

Lenbrook Residents enjoy many special interest groups and social clubs, ranging from book clubs and gardening to bridge and poetry groups. Creative outlets such as painting, drawing, and writing are also plentiful.  Art classes and writer’s roundtables let residents express themselves, develop new skills, and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of creative activities.

Sports and movement provide opportunities for both a mental and physical workout. Twice a month, residents don dancing shoes to learn or practice ballroom, line, and folk dances. Activities like water volleyball, croquet, and fitness classes help them exercise their bodies and brains. Residents who seek inspiration and enlightenment find it in Lenbrook’s diverse, non-denominational spiritual offerings.

Also, learning is not just about acquiring knowledge at Lenbrook; it’s about creating a dynamic lifestyle where each day offers opportunities for health, happiness, and personal growth. Whether it’s attending a lecture, learning a new skill, or engaging with the community, Lenbrook Residents are empowered to live their best lives through continuous learning.

Resident Joan Kurucz agrees. When asked about her experience living and learning at Lenbrook, she points to performances from talented artists, an extensive array of activities to attend, and the physical enrichment programs, adding, “What more could we want?”
