Image for Building a Balanced Plate

Remember the Food Guide Pyramid? Or maybe even the Food Wheel? Guess what ... the "Pyramid" is now a "Plate." In fact, it's called "My Plate". So what's up with this new guide for how to build a balanced plate for healthier living?

What is My Plate?

Image for Tips for Starting an Exercise Program at an Older Age

According to an article in Psychology Today, one of the major reasons people tend to stop exercising after recently starting an exercise routine is that they do not want to experience discomfort. After reading this article, it made me wonder whether this is the reason some residents are more hesitant than others to incorporate exercise into their everyday lives. Investigating further into this, I had conversations with several residents about this.

Image for 10 Tough Questions About Life Planning

The one true certainty we have in this life is that it is unpredictable and anything, good, bad or otherwise, can happen. Additionally, “it” is not only defined by the passage of time. "It" can also be influenced by proactive planning or, on the flip side, lack of planning. Let's take a look at the "10 Tough Questions About Life Planning."

Being able to live your best life, in all stages of life, takes planning. And we're not just talking about planning for your golden retirement years, but also for your end-of-life needs and wishes, too.

Being a positive influence and having a positive impact is something one of our former Lenbrook board members, Glen Jackson of Jackson & Spalding, would frequently talk with us about.  I remember a time we were walking through his Midtown offices and I noticed that when we came across his team members he would always acknowledge them in some way, often with a meaningful statement.

My mother-in-law lived at Lenbrook for three years so my husband Jack and I not only had heard about Lenbrook's reputation but had experienced it. I guess you could say we became second-generation Lenbrookers.

We signed up to move here when Lenbrook started building the new building. We picked our apartment on the 15th floor before it was even built. We were so excited that we'd drive by to look at it during construction. The view of Kennesaw Mountain and the sunsets are breathtaking.

Image for Wildcards and Success

People often correlate business principles with sports analogies. Recently, events in my sporting (Ironman) and business lives took two very different directions to teach me an important lesson.

At the end of last year, I qualified to compete in the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Championships to be held in Australia. (An “Ironman 70.3” is a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run.) This was a great honor since 130,000 people competed around the world in Ironman 70.3 events for the 3,000 qualifying spots available.

My husband Larry and I moved into Lenbrook this spring, and we are amazed at how fast Lenbrook has become “our home.” I’ve always been about “finding the best fit” because I have spent 30+ years helping high school students find their best college fit. (Missy was the head of College Counseling at Woodward Academy in Atlanta for 25 years.)

If you think Uber is just for Millennials or Gen X, I'm happy to report that we have many active Uber riders here at Lenbrook. We can thank our volunteer "Geezer Squad" for helping pave the way by conducting Uber workshops for residents in association with our L.I.V.E. department. This is just one example of how current technologies are making their way into our residents’ lives at Lenbrook.

Image for Tips to Stay Hydrated!

With more than 70% of our bodies being made up of water, proper hydration is a must for functioning at our best. On an average day --not accounting for summer heat or exercise -- our bodies can naturally lose up to 80 oz. of water! After the age of 65, dehydration is one of the most common preventable causes of hospitalization.
