We've been intentional about integrating the "The Lenbrook Way" into every aspect of our operations this past year. It's been a time of exploring, defining and putting into action the behaviors and service standards essential to creating excellent experiences for our residents.

The present day surge of the "elder" population causes many to revisit their long-held beliefs on aging. A myriad of questions surface concerning how we would like the latter chapters of our lives to unfold, such as:

  • Where will we live?
  • How do I want to be treated?
  • What do I fear the most?
  • Will my latter years really be "golden" or "tarnished?"

For after all, we all know that where and how you live DOES matter.

Special Note: As we celebrate Veterans Day on Nov. 11, we'd like to share Paul Crawford's personal account of his training and service as a fighter pilot with the U.S. Army Air Corps 14th Air Force Flying Tigers during WW-II. Paul was shot down by enemy ground fire while on a strafing run over Japanese-controlled territory in China.

"When I recall my time in WW-II, I always start by saying, I was not a hero! I was just there! That is not false modesty because it is the way I have always felt. I flew the P-51 Mustang.

Medicare Open Enrollment starts Oct. 15 and goes through Dec. 7. This is the time for all Medicare enrollees to compare their current plans and decide if they are in a position to make any changes that could have great potential to save them money.

Having a choice is a good thing. However, too many choices can be overwhelming.  It is important to first understand what you actually have. Medicare has several parts to it, so let’s review.

People often correlate business principles with sports analogies. Recently, events in my sporting (Ironman) and business lives took two very different directions to teach me an important lesson.

At the end of last year, I qualified to compete in the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Championships to be held in Australia. (An “Ironman 70.3” is a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run.) This was a great honor since 130,000 people competed around the world in Ironman 70.3 events for the 3,000 qualifying spots available.

My husband Larry and I moved into Lenbrook this spring, and we are amazed at how fast Lenbrook has become “our home.” I’ve always been about “finding the best fit” because I have spent 30+ years helping high school students find their best college fit. (Missy was the head of College Counseling at Woodward Academy in Atlanta for 25 years.)

Each year Lenbrook joins with thousands of senior living communities and organizations across the country to recognize Active Aging Week during the last week of September. Established in 2003 by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), this campaign celebrates the positivity of aging, living well and living life to the fullest at every age.

If you think Uber is just for Millennials or Gen X, I'm happy to report that we have many active Uber riders here at Lenbrook. We can thank our volunteer "Geezer Squad" for helping pave the way by conducting Uber workshops for residents in association with our L.I.V.E. department. This is just one example of how current technologies are making their way into our residents’ lives at Lenbrook.
